Learn how to solve common Widget problems

Updated over a week ago

If you're encountering issues with your RSS Widgets, follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve common problems.

1. Widget isn't displaying correctly

If your widget is not displaying as expected, try the following:

1. Check the Embed Method

Ensure you're using the correct method to embed the widget: iFrame, JavaScript, or Direct URL. Sometimes, switching from one method to another can resolve display issues. For example, if you’re using iFrame, try switching to JavaScript or vice versa.

2. Widget Customization

Adjust the widget settings to match your website’s layout. Make sure that you toggle the Responsive button in Customize > General for better display on mobile devices. Also, ensure that Mobile/Tablet settings are enabled to optimize the widget for different screen sizes.

3. Security Settings

If the widget isn’t showing up, ensure that your website’s domain is added to the widget’s security settings. This is required to prevent security conflicts and allow the widget to load properly on your website.

2. Widget isn't updating

Widgets automatically update based on the feed they were created from. If your widget isn’t showing new posts:

1. Check feed Refresh Rate

Since widgets update according to the feed's refresh cycle (15-60 minutes, depending on your Pricing Plan), make sure you're allowing enough time for the feed to refresh and pull in the latest content. If you've recently created a new feed, wait for the next refresh cycle for the widget to pull in new posts.

2. Clear feed cache

If the widget isn’t updating, clearing the feed cache may help. This forces the widget to fetch the latest content from the source feed during the next refresh cycle.

3. Adjust feed filters

If the content isn’t showing as expected, double-check your feed filters to make sure no content is being unintentionally excluded.

Check out our guide on Troubleshooting RSS feeds for more information.

3. Widget isn't loading or displaying incorrectly on mobile

If your widget isn’t displaying correctly on mobile devices, make sure that the Responsive feature is enabled in Customize > General. This adjusts the widget’s layout to ensure it displays properly on all screen sizes, including mobile and tablet devices.

4. Widget is showing unwanted content

If your widget is displaying content you don't want, you can explore the following feed filters.

1. Remove Duplicate Content

Enable the Duplicate Title or Duplicate Description in the Filters tab to automatically remove identical posts from your feed.

2. Remove or Hide Specific Posts

Use the Hide button to hide specific posts or Block Domain to block certain websites from appearing in your feed.

3. Use Whitelist Filter

Add keywords to the whitelist to make sure that only posts containing your keyword appear in your feed.

4. Use Blacklist Filter

Add keywords to the blacklist to automatically hide posts that contain them.

5. Enable Estimate Dates

If your feed doesn’t have timestamps, enable the Estimate Dates feature in Feed Output to help improve sorting and filtering of posts by estimated publishing dates.

6. Remove Old Posts

Sometimes, old posts linger in your feed even after they are no longer available on the source feed. Enable the Purge Old Posts feature in Expanded Feed Settings to automatically removes posts that are no longer present on the source feed.

7. Use Regex Filters

  • What it means: Regular expressions (Regex) allow for advanced content matching and filtering.

  • What to do: Enable Regex by clicking on .* and input Regex filters to create more specific and customized rules.

5. Widget isn't working with external platforms or websites

If your widget is not working when embedded on an external platform or website:

1. Verify Embed Code

Double-check the embed code to ensure it's correctly copied and pasted into the external platform. If you're using iFrame, JavaScript, or Direct URL methods, ensure that you’ve selected the proper code type for the platform you're embedding it on.

2. Check Permissions and Compatibility

Some external platforms may require specific permissions to display embedded widgets correctly. Ensure that any necessary permissions are granted and check that the platform supports the type of embed code you're using.

Due to security reasons, widgets cannot be embedded directly into email clients. To send RSS-based content in a newsletter, use an external service like MailChimp to format RSS feed items into emails and send them out.

6. Widget is loading slowly

If your widget is loading slowly on your website, consider these steps:

1. Enable Lazy Loading

  • What it is: Lazy loading is a technique that delays the loading of images or content until they are needed (e.g., when they come into view as a user scrolls). This helps improve loading times by only loading elements that are visible on the screen, reducing initial load time.

  • What to do: Go to Customize > Card > Image and toggle the Lazy Loading button on to enable this feature. This should improve the widget’s load speed, especially for image-heavy content.

2. Turn Off Embeds

  • Why it's slower: Embedding content such as images, videos, or large media files can slow down widget load times, especially if the external sources are slow or take time to load.

  • What to do: Disable embedded media to speed up the widget's loading time.
